Murder-Suicide in Kealakekua
The incident, which occurred around noon on January 2nd in the 81-6500 block of Mamalahoa Highway, occurred when a young man shot and killed his ex-girlfriend. After dating for nine months, the woman, a mother of three, filed for a 48-hour restraining order before Christmas citing physical and verbal abuse. After the man returned when the order expired, she tried filing a second on December 29th, but the court had not yet sent the order to the police when the man shot and killed the victim.
The murderer’s body was first discovered by the victim’s 71-year-old father when he walked to his daughter’s house from nearby on the same property and saw the man’s body laying outside, a gun nearby, and a bullet wound in the head. Going inside, he then discovered the body of his daughter, also with a bullet wound to the head.
The news of the violence shocked the close-knit community and left the family of the woman grieving, wishing more had been done to protect her. As the community comes to terms with this devastating incident, Hawaii County police are diligently conducting investigations to piece together the events leading to this tragedy.
